HYDERABAD: The shortage of Remdesivir medicine in Telangana has led to panic in hospitals and illegal sale of the drug in the black market, as the COVID cases are on a spike in the State. Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday tweeted that he had held discussions with several manufacturers of Remdesivir, for the supply of the drug, as per the directions of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao. He said that arrangements were made to procure four lakh plus vials to be made available across all Government hospitals within a week.

Hyderabad: IT and industries minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday said that about four lakh injections of Remdesivir will be ready in a week’s time at government hospitals in the state. His statement comes at a time when there is a sharp rise in demand for the drug from families of COVID-19 patients. The drug is also being sold in black at exorbitant prices by medical show owners to cash in on the shortage.
The government on Tuesday waived customs duty on a key coronavirus (Covid-19) drug Remdesivir and its raw materials to lower cost amid a sharp increase in demand in the country. According to a notification from the customs department, the duty waiver was for Remdesivir injection, Remdesivir API and Beta Cyclodextrin, a key input, till October 31, 2021. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in a statement said, “In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priority to ensure affordable medical care for Covid-19 patients, imports of Remdesivir API, injection and specific inputs have been made import duty free. This should increase supply and reduce cost thus providing relief to patients.

Hyderabad: Three persons, including two employees of Hetero Healthcare, were arrested by the city police for black marketing generic versions of the Remdesivir drug (vials), which is currently in high demand to treat COVID-19 patients. The accused were selling each vial of the drug for as much as Rs 20,000 to those who are desperately looking to purchase it. Twelve

According to the deputy commissioner of police (north zone), the accused were identified as Shaik Saleem Jaffar, B. Venkatesh and Jonnala Sharan Sai. Of them, Saleem and Venkatesh are employed with Hetero Health , Kukatpally, as a area business manager and filed sales officer. The government is trying to double the production of Remdesivir injection, used in the treatment of Covid-19 infected patients, in the next 15 days, Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, said on Sunday. The announcement follows a decision by seven pharmaceutical companies in India to reduce the price of the lifesaving drug by 25-70 per cent. Sharing a video message on Twitter, Mandaviya said, “Government is trying to ramp up the production of lifesaving Remdesivir injection in the country and to make it more affordable. Production will be doubled to 3 lakh vials from the current production of 1.5 lakh vials each day.”
