Shell Freedom Over Texas, will return from 7pm-10pm Sunday, July 4, organizers announced. The celebration and accompanying music act will again be televised on CultureMap partner ABC13. New this year, fireworks will soar to 800 feet nearly doubling the height of the traditional show, allowing even more viewers to take in the show from farther away. Eleanor Tinsley Park will be open for fireworks viewing only for families who park downtown and walk (Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive will be closed for fallout), per a press release.

Houston Restaurant Weeks 2021 is Announced

It s the time that Houston gourmands look forward to every year: Houston Restaurant Weeks. The annual fundraiser created by Cleverley Stone began in 2003 and has raised $16.6 million for Houston Food Bank and continues to be the largest fundraiser for Houston Food Bank which is also the largest food bank in the nation. Serving more than just the city and Harris County, it also offers aid to the counties of Montgomery, Galveston and Brazos Valley. Last year, Houston Food Bank was able to deliver 159 million meals to 18 counties in Southeast Texas through 1,500 community partners which include food pantries, soup kitchens, social service providers and schools.

A color-coded system could help people make healthier choices at food pantries, study shows Taylor Avery, USA TODAY Replay Video Food pantry patrons make healthier choices when foods are organized by nutrition level, new research shows. Using a food categorizing system called Supporting Wellness at Pantries that ranks different foods based on their level of saturated fat, sodium and added sugars, researchers found patrons selected 11% more healthy foods and decreased unhealthy choices by 7%. The most important finding from this study is that people who go to food pantries, like all of us, want to eat a healthy diet, and it s very hard to quickly figure out which items are the healthiest, said Marlene Schwartz, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity and an author of the study. The event offers diners specially-priced multi-course prix fixe menus for brunch, lunch,and dinner, available for dine-in and take-out. Participating restaurants will make donations based on their HRW sales; $1 per every $20 brunch and lunch meal sold; $3 per every $35 dinner sold; and $5 per every $49 dinner sold. HRW founder and owner Cleverley Stone passed away in 2020 following a battle with cancer.
