Plain Perfect in Washington Huskies Softball Opener

Photo by Tim Nwachukwu/NCAA Photos via Getty Images Gabbie Plain sent 15 up, 15 down for the second time in her career as second-ranked Washington softball opened their 2021 season with a 8-0, 5-inning win over Southern Utah at the Rebel Kickoff in Las Vegas. Plain struck out seven Thunderbirds in the win. The closest SUU (0-1) came to reaching base was a pop fly to shallow right-center in the third that second baseman Taryn Atlee flagged down over her shoulder. Baylee Klingler and Sami Reynolds hit the first two home runs of the 2021 season for the Huskies on consecutive pitches in the top of the second. Sis Bates reached base all four times to the plate (three singles and a walk) and scored three runs.

Tallying up a year of loss: A lot of pounds, too many loved ones, countless connections

During this harrowing time, I have been preoccupied with losing weight. I haven’t talked about it much, preferring to shed in isolation. For those who have noticed the clues — my slimmer face on video calls, occasional pictures from my wife on social media, a few text-message references — the reaction always includes the same question. How much have you lost? I tell them, “I’ll let you know when I’m done.” When you’re winning on the scale, losing can be a tease. Over the past 10 months, I have felt lighter and lighter. I have acted out my favorite athlete cliché, the one in which a player emerges from the offseason claiming to be in the best shape of his life. Discarding pounds has been a method of control, a way to corral the chaos and make lemons into sugar-free lemonade. This pursuit seems so right for 2020. We’re all wanting to feel light again.
