JD Sports is facing an investor backlash after handing its boss a £4.3m bonus despite benefiting from millions of pounds in Covid support.
Executive chairman Peter Cowgill s total pay, including a short-term salary reduction, reached nearly £5m.
Shareholder advisory group Glass Lewis recommends that investors vote against JD Sports inappropriate pay policy.
The retailer received £61m through the UK furlough scheme and an estimated £38m in business rates relief.
It benefitted from an additional £25m in wage support from other countries where it operates, including the US.
JD Sports was also granted a £300m loan through the Bank of England s Covid Corporate Financing Facility Scheme which was set up to help larger firms through the pandemic.

Becky Pepper-Jackson started running with her mother when she was 5 years old. As she followed her mom through a park in their town of Bridgeport, W.Va., she would sing the chorus to “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon. When she forgot the lyrics, she would make up her own.
Running is a tradition in her family. Becky said she grew up cheering for her brothers at track meets, marveling at the cross-country medals hanging on the walls.
“I was always like, ‘I want to run,’” said Becky, now 11.

Heather Jackson filed a lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of her daughter, 11-year-old Becky Pepper-Jackson, challenging West Virginiaâs new law banning transgender girls and women from participating in school-sanctioned sports that align with their gender identity. Pepper-Jackson, a runner, is being prohibited from joining her middle schoolâs cross-country team because she is transgender.
