Heads you win: When Barrow head was presented with award by TV star

The sound of building work was reverberating through St James’ Junior School in Barrow in 1997. The work at the Victorian school building would provide an extra classroom, an improved lay-out, a second entranceway and new toilet facilities. The project went ahead after discussions with the Department for Education and Employment in London to secure the £70,000 needed to fund the work. Head teacher Angela Rawlinson said: “What we’re trying to do is re-design the school to meet the needs of the present day and the national curriculum.” The next project for the school was to be the establishment of a library, for which it was hoped to attract money from the Government fund for school improvements and from the local business community.

Northern Ireland MP Gregory Campbell is accused of race-baiting

A Northern Ireland MP has come under fire after he described the representation of black people on an edition of Songs of Praise as the BBC at its BLM (Black Lives Matter) worst . Anti-racism groups have called on the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MP Gregory Campbell to apologise over his race-baiting and irresponsible remarks on the BBC s Gospel Singer of the Year competition. The programme, which was filmed at Gorton Monastery in Manchester, featured five semi-finalists, three judges and a presenter who were all of a black ethnicity.   In his Facebook post, which was shared on January 31, the East Londonderry MP wrote: Just watched BBC TV Songs of Praise which this week was Gospel Singer of the year semi final. This I m afraid was BBC at its BLM worst.

Camp Bestival 2021 preparations still underway

Scenes from Camp Bestival last year PREPARATIONS are still under way for Camp Bestival to go ahead as originally planned - despite the cancellation of Glastonbury Festival – with its organiser still ‘optimistic’ festival season will happen this summer. Glastonbury Festival announced last week that it would not take place in 2021 and cited concerns about the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing social distancing measures. News about the hugely popular festival’s cancellation prompted questions about the future of this summer’s festival season and if other events will go ahead as scheduled. But Camp Bestival organisers are confident the extravaganza will return to Lulworth Castle from Thursday, July 29 to Sunday, August 1 - with headline acts announced and tickets still available.
