The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) is continuing COVID-19 sensitisation training exercises with frontline workers in the tourism sector.
Manager, Product Development (Innovation & Strategy), Terry Vanterpool-Fox, while speaking during a session at Hilton Barbados this morning, said that the programme last year was a success as many workers in the transport sector were trained and received certification.
She said there were more than 1 400 transport providers, including taxi operators and public service vehicle drivers and more than 700 were trained.
Vanterpool-Fox said there was evidence that the sessions were meaningful and producing positive results. She pointed out that during a workshop last month the head of the COVID Monitoring Unit Ronald Chapman announced that none of the taxi operators had a record of transfer

A former British beauty queen charged with breaching Barbados’ quarantine laws was released on bail earlier Wednesday when she appeared in the District D Magistrates’ Court.
Bail for Zara Holland was set at $20 000 with a follow up date of January 12, 2021 to ascertain whether the fine was paid.
Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes initially handed down a fine of $12 000 to be paid in seven days or nine months for breaching quarantine. If the money is not paid, Weekes said, a warrant for her arrest will be issued through Interpol.
Holland arrived in Barbados to stay at Hilton Barbados, but was placed in quarantine at Sugar Bay Hotel. She was caught at the Grantley Adams International Airport attempting to flee the island on December 29, 2020.

NIS joins race to make payments before Christmas Day

The Ministry of Tourism, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and a handful of hoteliers are locked in a race against time to deliver thousands in outstanding severance payments in time for Christmas.

Barbados TODAY that the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa has finally agreed to pay its former employees. The Government senator has also confirmed that NIS officials are working around the clock to deliver 100 per cent of the funds owed to severed employees of the Hilton Barbados.
