Sault Symphony Orchestra is paying off debt and planning to share more music online as the group continues to wait to return to public performances post-COVID-19. The symphony has shed about half of the $27,000 that was owing on a line of credit in 2019, treasurer Dr. Kimlan Bell said during an annual general meeting on Tuesday evening. The line of credit was closed out in December 2019. The symphony is now paying a five-year loan of $13,000. “We made quite a significant debt in the debt in just one year,” said Bell during the online meeting. “We’ve come a long, long way. We’re doing really well.”

There have been 16 new cases of COVID-19 in Algoma in the past week, as well as an outbreak declared at a long-term care home. Algoma Public Health announced five new cases on Dec. 31. Case 66 was the result of international travel while case 67 is unknown exposure. Case 68 and 69 are the result of close contact and case 70 is unknown exposure. All cases are from Sault Ste. Marie and area, and all individuals are self-isolating. Algoma Public Health declared an outbreak at Extendicare Maple View in the late evening of Dec. 31 following confirmation of COVID-19 in two staff members. APH is working closely with Extendicare Maple View’s care team to take further preventive actions to protect staff and residents. At this time, the two staff members remain in isolation to prevent further transmission.
Should You Plan a 2021 Trip to Israel?
If you had asked me in early December 2020 whether it would be possible to visit Israel in 2021, my answer would’ve been a total “yes.” At that point, vaccines were rapidly rolling out in the Jewish State (and around the world); for the first time, the beginning of the end of the pandemic was in sight.
It still is, in early 2021, when I’m updating this. Unfortunately, news of a “mutant” variant of the virus from the UK (and another from South Africa) triggered a fresh round of travel restrictions around the world, including a complete closure of Israel’s border for an indefinite period, in spite of zero evidence that the variant is deadlier or might evade the antibody response of nascent vaccines.

An elderly man from Hilton Beach is dead following a two-vehicle collision in St. Joseph Township on Monday morning.
A car, northbound on Highway 548, lost control, crossed into the southbound lane and struck a southbound pickup truck at about 11:30 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police say. It was snowing at the time.
