Two people died on Mount Everest this week. (Patch graphic)
GLASTONBURY, CT A Glastonbury resident died during a climbing expedition on Mount Everest this week, according to the New Haven Register.
The Register reported Puwei Liu, 55, was one of two people who died Wednesday on Mount Everest. Abdul Waraich of Switzerland also died. They were the first fatalities this season on the world s highest peak.
Both men died of exhaustion, according to Chhang Dawa Sherpa.

Dawa, director of Seven Summit Treks, wrote in a post on Facebook that Waraich died near the South Summit. Dawa said that Waraich successfully reached the summit but began experiencing issues during his descent. We sent two additional Sherpas with oxygen and foods, unfortunately Sherpas couldn t save him.
An American man climbing Mount Everest became one of the seasonâs first casualties when he died Wednesday night.
Puwei Liu, identified only as a U.S. national, had reached the climbing feature named the Hillary Step, between South Col and the summit, but had to turn back due to snow blindness and exhaustion, according to Chhang Dawa of the expedition organizer, Seven Summit Treks, in Nepal.
Sherpas helped Liu back to South Col, but were unable to save him.
A Swiss climber, 41-year-old Abdul Waraich, also died after reaching the peak.
âWe sent two additional Sherpas with oxygen and food,â Dawa wrote. âUnfortunately, the Sherpas couldnât save him.â
