AHMEDABAD: The lion number in Gujarat has officially crossed 700 this year, registering a 6-8% rise in the population, top sources in the state forest department said. The increase was noted in the ‘Poonam Avlokan’ (observations during full moon) drive, reports Himanshu Kaushik. The exercise was taken up from last year.
Forest department officials said the official lion population could be between 710 and 730. In 2020, 674 animals were recorded with an increase rate of 28.9% over the 2019 figure. The previous high in the growth rate was 27% in 2015 over the 2010 figures. The 2015 count was 523 lions.

Authorities allow them to vote again following a gaffe in ballot papers
A gaffe in the ballot papers forced the district authorities to conduct a re-poll for the first 11 voters at the Saakuru Gunnepalli polling station in Amalapuram mandal in East Godavari district on Thursday.
After the first 11 voters exercised their franchise in the MPTC and ZPTC elections, the authorities detected that the details of the candidates printed on the ballot papers mismatched.
“Following a mix-up, the first 11 voters have been given ballot papers of some other polling station. Polling has been stopped for a few minutes,” East Godavari District Collector D. Muralidhar Reddy told
