TDOE Announces Several Local Schools Selected For Teaching All Students Initiative Through $5.5M Grant Friday, February 26, 2021 The Tennessee Department of Education on Friday announced the 18 schools selected to participate in the first cohort of the Teaching All Students Initiative to serve students with the most significant cognitive disabilities, including several local schools. Earl Freudenberg: David Leatherwood Retires After 52 Years In The Grocery Business Monday, February 15, 2021 - by Earl Freudenberg David Leatherwood David Leatherwood is retiring from the Food City in Hixson at the end of the month.  David has helped feed our families for 52 years.  He started with the Red Food Store while still a student at Hixson High School and went from bag boy to manager.  My father Charles was a regular customer at the Rivermont Store. Dad, who was in the grocery business in North Chattanooga for years, said Mr. Leatherwood was one of the last old fashion grocery store managers.  Mr. Leatherwood was always interested in my father’s experiences in the food store business.  Dad said Mr. Leatherwood would greet each customer with a smile and “is there anything I can help you with?”

Hamilton County Schools Partners With PEF To Expand Access To eLabs Tuesday, February 2, 2021 The Public Education Foundation, in partnership with Hamilton County Schools, announced a $1 million investment from an anonymous donor to open 15 new eLabs in HCS and to support the further development of the world-leading eLab network.    Officials said, HCS eLabs provide students with rich learning opportunities in engineering, computing and environmental technology through hands-on activities with digital fabrication equipment (including 3D printing, micro-computing and robotics). Now, more than ever, students need opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in science, technology, and innovation. The HCS eLabs provide a state-of-the-art learning environment where students can hone those skills as they develop resiliency and confidence solving real-world problems.

Davis, Thomas Martin Sunday, January 24, 2021 Thomas Martin Davis, age 80,  of Hixson, passed away peacefully at Generations Center of Spencer, Tennessee on Wednesday, January 20 th, 2021. Mr. Davis was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Ovis and Edna G. Davis.  He was a longtime resident of Hixson, Tennessee, a Hixson High School graduate, and was named Mr. Hixson High in 1958.  In 1970, he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He was a member of the Tennessee National Guard prior to his enlistment to the U.S. Air Force.  His active years of service included two years of foreign services at the Naha Air Force Base, Okinawa where he received the Airman of the month award of the 51
