HALIFAX The independent public inquiry into the Nova Scotia mass killing will begin its next public proceedings in October. In an update Wednesday, the Mass Casualty Commission announced the events will take place between October 26 and December 10 at the Halifax Convention Centre and other venues. The commission says the proceedings will help determine the facts of what happened, and will be held both in-person and virtual, if necessary. Last Friday, members of the commission’s various investigative and legal teams visited the community of Portapique, N.S. where the gunman began his killing rampage the night of April 19, 2020. He was shot and killed by police at a gas station the next day.
FREDERICTON Lawyers for a doctor who faced a barrage of hate and racism after being accused of violating COVID-19 measures in New Brunswick say time is running out for Premier Blaine Higgs to apologize. Dr. Jean-Robert Ngola was accused of violating the province s Emergency Measures Act, but the Crown withdrew the charge last week after concluding there was no chance of conviction. On May 27, 2020 in the face of a growing outbreak in Campbellton, N.B., Higgs referred to an irresponsible health-care worker and said the matter was being handled by the RCMP. The outbreak eventually affected 40 people and resulted in two deaths.
HALIFAX Police in Yarmouth, N.S. are searching for a suspect who allegedly robbed a convenience store at knifepoint on Tuesday afternoon. Yarmouth Town RCMP says at approximately 4:30 p.m. on June 8, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at a convenience store on Main Street. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that a man had entered the store, made a purchase and then approached the employee behind the counter. Police say the man showed the employee a knife and took cash from the register, before leaving the store on foot. No one was physically injured as a result of this incident.
HALIFAX A 44-year-old man from Kings County, P.E.I. is facing impaired driving charges resulting from a police check stop on Tuesday night. Police say at 9:30 p.m. on June 8, Kings District RCMP officers were conducting a traffic check-stop on Route #4 in Cardigan, P.E.I. During the check-stop, officers stopped a pickup truck driven by a 44-year-old man from Kings County. Police say the driver provided a roadside breath sample which indicated he had above the legal amount of alcohol in his system. Police say the driver was arrested and transported to the Montague RCMP Detachment where he provided samples of his breath, almost double the legal limit.
HALIFAX Two women and a man have been charged with drug-related offences following a Nova Scotia RCMP investigation into drug trafficking. On June 4, officers stopped two vehicles in Hantsport, N.S. Police say two women were arrested at the scene and a quantity of crack cocaine was seized. At the same time, police searched a home in Garlands Crossing, N.S., resulting in the arrest of a man and the seizure of cocaine and currency. A 52-year-old woman from Garlands Crossing is facing charges of Trafficking, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and Production of a Controlled Substance. A 29-year-old woman from Kings County is facing charges of Possession of Cocaine.
