Patricio O’Donnell, M.D., Ph.D. is Executive Medical Director in the Translational Research and Early Clinical group at Takeda Pharmaceuticals. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. (in Physiology) degrees from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. After a residency in Internal Medicine, he did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh with Tony Grace. He spent the next 16 years in academia, first at Albany Medical College and later at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His academic career focused on translational studies to understand the neuronal circuitry implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders. In 2013, Patricio was recruited by Pfizer to lead discovery efforts for psychiatric indications. In that role, he led a variety of internal efforts and external collaborations aimed at identifying genetically-informed novel targets, as well as finding biomarkers for patient stratification. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) was established in 1890 as research unit of the Smithsonian Institution concentrating on studies of solar radiance. Sixty-five years later, SAO assumed responsibility for establishing an optical network for tracking the first artificial satellites. From this pioneering effort, the size and scope of SAO grew with the international space program to include major research in virtually all branches of astrophysics, as well as in areas of earth and planetary sciences.
Since 1955, when its headquarters moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, SAO has pursued such research in close collaboration with the Harvard College Observatory (HCO) and Harvard University Department of Astronomy.
