Strathcona County has once again decided against increasing property taxes in the municipality for 2021.
Council cemented the municipal tax rate on Tuesday, May 4. Elected officials approved a zero per cent municipal property tax increase and reduce late tax payment penalties for the year due to the continuing uncertainty of COVID-19.

“Our healthy financial position and strategic allocation of dollars has given us the ability to weather the storm,” said Mayor Rod Frank. “No tax increase and a break on penalties aims to ease the pressures for residential and non-residential property owners during the pandemic.”

Strathcona County could benefit greatly from this week’s federal budget.
On Monday, April 19, the federal Liberals tabled a $101 billion budget, which promised a plan for national child-care, business supports, and post-pandemic recovery projects.

“No surprise, it was stimulus budget. For the times, there has to be some stimulus,” Mayor Rod Frank said in reaction. “There are a lot of people who are hurting due to COVID. There are people on both sides of the coin whose health is at risk and others who have their livelihoods at risk, so the government had to address that. In the longer term, we’re going to have to look at the deficit and debt side, but that will be in a future budget.”

While the municipalityâs slogan continues to be becoming Canadaâs most liveable community, Strathcona County tumbled 49 spots on
Macleanâs Canadaâs Best Communities.
In 2019, Strathcona County ranked 81 on this yearâs coveted national ranking of the best communities to live and work in, but it has since dropped to #130 in 2021.
