While d’Autremont wanted to assure Estrada that he, along with officials from the school, were listening, he also expressed that the school’s primary focus was on getting students back into the classroom.
“My team and I are currently consumed with working out how to do this in light of the ever-changing restrictions associated with the COVID shutdowns,” he wrote. “This is not an excuse, but rather a transparent admission that we are working as hard as we can to get this piece in place first.”
The meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, and is intended to help the district’s governing board “learn about the history of the Hart High School mascot and to understand the issues that are being raised.”

Early that morning, the now-85-year-old “hidden figure” of NASA’s space program proved the success of a camera system he’d adapted for use on the Apollo 6 spacecraft. But that now-famous slow-motion film footage, which was among the first to show the curvature of the Earth from space, was overshadowed that evening by the assassination of Jacobs’ longtime hero, Martin Luther King, Jr.
The special meeting came less than a week after Kuhlman, sent out an email to families within the district outlining what the start of the spring semester will look like.
“As you are all aware, we are in the midst of a surge in COVID transmissions throughout the Southern California community,” Kuhlman wrote in an email Friday. “We’ve been monitoring this situation closely over the holiday break to ensure that we adhere closely to the requirements of State and County health orders.”
At the time, Kuhlman said that district officials would provide support to small cohorts of students throughout the district at the start of the spring semester, which began Monday.
Hart High School Closes Campus Due To Coronavirus Cases
Hart High School in Newhall is to temporarily close its campus to remaining students and staff members amid reports of positive cases of COVID-19.
“Today, we were notified by the LA County Department of Public Health that Hart High School will need to be temporarily closed because of the existence of at least three linked cases of COVID-19 on campus,” said William S. Hart High School District Superintendent Mike Kuhlman in a statement Wednesday night. “This will require the closure of the campus for a 14-day period that will extend through at least December 30th.”
