COVID-19: Taylor County adds 6 deaths Thursday; recoveries top 10,000

Taylor County now has recorded 232 COVID-related deaths. The county also reported that the number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 surpassed 10,000 to 10,070 (4,605 polymerase chain reaction cases and 5,465 antigen cases).  The deceased are:  Woman in her 50s with preexisting conditions Man in his 60s with unknown medical predisposition Woman in her 40s with unknown medical predisposition Woman in her 70s with preexisting conditions Woman in her 60s with unknown medical predisposition The average age of the deceased since the first reported death is 75. Of the 184 new cases, 66 are based on PCR tests and 118 on antigen tests.  Active cases total 2,530 (1108 PCR cases and 1,422 antigen cases). A week ago on Jan. 7, the number of active cases was 2,066.

But UNM’s Teton Saltes, now in law school, hasn’t been an ordinary lineman. Both on and off the field, Saltes has made the most of his collegiate career, involving himself with children, literacy and suicide and bullying prevention. Last week, Saltes was named one of three finalists for the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy, college football’s premier award for community service. Oh, by the way, the 6-foot-6, 322-pound Valley High alumnus was also named All-Mountain West Conference honorable mention this year and has been a perennial Lobo Scholar-Athlete.

The Texas Senate Health and Human Services Committee heard testimony on documented increases in suicides, substance abuse, and depression, related to COVID-19.  The pandemic has affected every part of life, from health to isolation and job loss.  The families of more than 300,000 Americans are grieving their loss.   A poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation earlier this year showed that 53% of adults in the United states reported that the coronavirus pandemic had negatively impacted their mental health.  36% of respondents reported difficulty sleeping, 32% indicated changes to their eating; and 12% said their alcohol or substance use had increased.

Former interim Nacogdoches County Chamber president, community leader dies Bill Teague By Gary Bass | December 28, 2020 at 11:14 AM CST - Updated December 28 at 6:25 PM NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Bill Teague, who once served as the interim president and CEO of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and was active with the town’s Rotary and Booster clubs, died at his home on Dec. 25. Teague was 83 when he died, and he was born on Oct. 24, 1937. The community leader’s obituary on the Laird Funeral Home website featured a quote from Teague, who said, “So remember, ‘All days are good, some are just better than others.”
