CAMBRIDGE â Walkers commemorated a rescue led by Harriet Tubman on Thursday, Dec. 24, when they marched from East New Market to downtown Cambridge.
According to event organizer Linda Harris, the march from Faith Community United Methodist Church to the Harriet Tubman Museum was to remember and celebrate Tubmanâs Christmas Eve 1854 rescue that resulted in the emancipation of her brother and three other people that have been enslaved.
Harris said she hoped the group whom she dubbed âThe Freedom Seekersâ would be making the almost 11 mile trek every year.
Marcher Ken Johnston participated in a commemorative walk for the same event last year near Philadelphia. Johnston said that walk began early in the morning and continued through sunrise and finished in the daylight, but this yearâs march was scheduled for later.
