For make-up artist Jenny Coombs, everything comes down to skin. “I am very passionate about skin looking like skin and all of the beautiful textures to play with,” she says. The 74th EE British Academy Film Awards, also known as the BAFTAS, are taking place across this weekend, with the ceremony broadcast across the UK and Ireland at 7pm tonight.
Although winners will be accepting their gongs virtually from home, an opulent ceremony – complete with red carpet – will be taking place in Royal Albert Hall where a host of stars will present the winning awards.
Irish actress Niamh Algar, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Calm With Horses, is attending the event virtually from Cape Town wearing a fiery gown from Maison Valentino.

That was 2020. This year, however, has introduced a weird, semi-virtual, socially distant awards season, and with it an equally weird return to red carpet dressing. The Golden Globes was the first major awards show to be held during the pandemic, and featured some remote guests and some in the auditorium. The challenge of striking the right tone – looking nice but not
too nice; burnishing one’s star without appearing to be dripping with privilege – was played out in the outfits. Some dressed as though emerging into a second roaring 20s (see: Anya Taylor-Joy in an emerald green Dior gown), while others, such as Jodie Foster and Jason Sudeikis, tipped up, virtually, in hoodies and pyjamas.

The stars delivered glamour on the virtual red carpet
While most of us were breaking into our Easter egg haul, Hollywood s most glamorous were proving that they could still deliver fashion fantasy, despite being in their back gardens rather than on the red carpet for the 2021 Screen Actors Guild awards.
With the traditional ceremony format still on furlough thanks to the pandemic, many celebrities seem to be having more fun than ever with their fashion statements, free from the worry of having to pose then sit for hours in their choices. It s a mood with bodes well for the Oscars which are due to take place later this month.
