The accident happened near St. Paul Street and Bernard Avenue around 11 a.m. at the Bernard Block, a major three-tower residential and commercial project being constructed by Okanagan builder Mission Group.

The crane was being used to build a 25-storey residential tower and was taller than the building it was helping to construct. The upper portion of the crane toppled, leaving most of the crane’s support tower standing.
At least three people were sent to hospital, including one in critical condition, but it is likely there are more injured.
One died in hospital and three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Macintosh said the crane operator hasn’t been found but police believe his body is buried in the rubble.
The upper portion of the crane smashed into a neighbouring building, leaving most of its support tower attached.

The collapse, which occurred during the dismantling process, knocked out power for most of Kelowna’s downtown core and forced an evacuation of the area as the city declared an ongoing state of local emergency.
