Two unsuccessful attempts to get the superintendent’s recommendation approved means that who will lead the Hamburg School District’s athletic program next year is still in question.
The candidates are Laura âLollyâ Lesher, an incumbent; Ryan Gebely and Thao Huynh.
We asked the candidates to respond to two questions.

Question 2: What are you learning when you talk to voters?
Laura âLollyâ Lesher, 57.
Background: A resident of Upper Tulpehocken Township, she is a dairy farmer and farm market retailer. She graduated from Penn State University, and has four children.
Response 1: Continue to work to balance a high quality education with fiscal responsibility.
Response 2: Parents want face-to-face education. Remote learning is not effective. There can be a balance of safety and hands-on education for all students. Educating and developing smart, educated students requires a sound home life, great teachers and the basic tools to engage and inspire our students.
Only 1/3 of N.J. schools are fully open for in-person learning. Most are still hybrid.

Only about one-third of New Jersey schools are fully in-person as of this week, as Gov. Phil Murphy pushes all of the state’s schools to reopen and sharply criticized the 15 districts that have remained totally virtual.
As of May 4, 450 school districts were hybrid, 15 were remote and 298 were fully in-person the sixth week in a row the number of in-person districts increased. Forty-eight districts have different educational formats for different schools.
