Weekend Solar Flare Frenzy Could Spark Geomagnetic Storms 05/25/2021
[UPDATED 2021-05-25 1704 UTC] The Space Weather Prediction Center (
SWPC) has issued a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm watch for May 25 and 27 and a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch for May 26. These are the result of the combined effects of multiple coronal mass ejections associated with solar flares on May 22 and 23.
According to
Spaceweather.com, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded 10 C-class and two M-class flares. Subsequent analysis revealed multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) associated with the flares. According to NOAA models, CMEs will initially interact with Earth’s magnetosphere late on May 25 with effects potentially continuing through early May 27.
East Bay SM Jim Siemons, W6LK, Stepping Down; Mike Patterson, N6JGA, Appointed 05/25/2021
ARRL East Bay Section Manager Jim Siemons, W6LK, is stepping down because he is relocating to Wyoming. Siemons has served as East Bay SM since July 2018. Mike Patterson, N6JGA, has been appointed to succeed him, effective June 1.
Siemons said, “There really is not a greater honor for a ham like me than to watch so many people get their licenses, learn the code, program a radio for the first time, win some ‘wallpaper,’ or just enjoy each other’s company over a cup of coffee. I get to constantly witness this as SM. ARRL afforded me the opportunity to have experiences and gain memories that will last me forever!”
