Ontario s stay-at-home order could be extended if coronavirus numbers don t go down more

Published Monday, May 10, 2021 1:02PM EDT Last Updated Monday, May 10, 2021 5:51PM EDT Ontario’s top public health official says that he would like to see daily case counts fall to “well below 1,000” before the stay-at-home order is lifted, a metric that the province hasn t hit with any regularity since October. The Ontario government issued a four-week stay at home order back on April 7 but later extended it for another two weeks as the healthcare system came under increased strain and Canadian Forces personnel were deployed at several hospitals dealing with an influx of COVID patients. The current order is now set to expire on May 19 but during a press conference on Monday afternoon Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams seemed to pour cold water on the idea of loosening restrictions in time for the Victoria Day long weekend.

Ontario COVID-19 reopening plan unknown, province remains tight-lipped

TORONTO Ontario s stay-at-home order is expected to be extended until at least June in an effort to further drive down the third COVID-19 pandemic wave. However, municipal officials, business owners, and residents have been increasingly demanding transparency and clarity for which benchmarks will lead to a reopening. But there are more factors that need to be considered, including the percentage of the population vaccinated, the impact on our health-care system and how much the virus is spreading. Speaking with CTV’s Power Play on Monday, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said the public needs to know what thresholds must be met before the stay-at-home order is lifted.

Trudeau announces billions in funding for five Toronto-area transit projects

TORONTO Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced $12 billion in federal funding for five rapid transit projects in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including the Ontario Line subway. Approximately $10.7 billion of the investment will go towards the cost of building the four projects included in the Progressive Conservative’s $28.5 billion transit plan: the three-stop Scarborough subway extension, the Ontario Line subway, the Yonge subway extension into Richmond Hill and the planned extension of the Eglinton Crosstown from Mount Denis to Renforth Drive. The money will also help pay for a new rapid transit line in Hamilton that will go from McMaster University to Eastgate Centennial Park in Stoney Creek. That project was previously cancelled by the Ford government in December, 2019 before being revived this year.

The agreement comes with a team option for a multi-year extension. There are a lot of reasons with a lot of layers to this decision, but when all things were considered, we feel this is best for the future of the Toronto Rock and we’re very excited to work with FirstOntario Centre, Jamie Dawick, the Rock s owner, president and general manager said in a release. There is a strong business case behind the relocation to Hamilton, including a significant reduction in game operations costs as well as the opportunities that exist to better connect with our fan base and most importantly grow that fan base and increase revenues.
