Mortal Kombat comes to theaters and HBO Max this weekend, and just in case you need a little incentive, Warner Bros. went ahead and released the first seven minutes of the film online. This action-packed, blood-drenched opener takes you back to 1617 and shows the start of a battle between Bi-Han (
Joe Taslim) and Hanzo Hasashi (
Hiroyuki Sanada). Of course, those familiar with the
Mortal Kombat series will likely recognize that those characters are destined to become Sub-Zero and Scorpion – but when the film starts, that hasn’t happened just yet.
Mortal Kombat Opening Scene
Nearly three decades after its release, Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 ‘Mortal Kombat’ is still celebrated among viewers for being one of the best video game adaptations ever. So it’s safe to say that expectations for this new version are pretty high. And while first-time director Simon McQuoid does a great job of updating the film for the modern day, it fails just a tiny bit in reaching the lofty bar set by the original.
But the good news first. McQuoid’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ will no doubt satisfy fans looking for intense action sequences, gory violence and opulent sets. The cheesy dialogues, mirroring the original film, are also pretty much intact. The movie also benefits greatly from casting real-life martial artists in main roles, giving a breathtaking fervour and excitement to the fight scenes.

If your strongest memory regarding the beloved video game
Mortal Kombat involves you dropping a quarter into an arcade game so you could punch and kick the living daylights out of an anonymous opponent, then you might not realize that the
Mortal Kombat property boasts a deep and rich expanded mythology. Yes, on a basic level, the game involves characters such as Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Sub-Zero staring their enemies down in hand-to-hand, face-to-face combat. But over 30 years and almost a dozen different games, the mythology of
Mortal Kombat has expanded, and the opening scene from the upcoming movie dives head first into that fascinating realm.
