HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Hattiesburg High School has a state champion walking among them.
Over the weekend, Hattiesburg sophomore Logan Green won the state championship for speech and debate.
“When people hear speech and debate, they think you’re just up there arguing like you’re a lawyer. That is one side of it, but I do the speech part, which is basically acting and interpreting,” Logan said.

PINE BELT (WDAM) - School districts in the Pine Belt are announcing plans to dismiss students early Tuesday due to the threat of severe weather.
Below is a list of districts that have announced schedule changes. The list will be updated as more schools announce changes.
Baxterville School: Dismissing at 1:30 p.m.
Columbia School District: Dismissing at 1:45 p.m.
Covington County School District: Dismissing at noon
Forrest County School District 10th, 11th and 12th grades: Dismissing at 2:45 p.m.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Hattiesburg High School is planning to have a traditional graduation ceremony this year for its graduating class of 2021.
All students in the graduating class will be given four tickets to the commencement ceremony and there will be regulations put into place to abide by COVID-19 protocols.
“Even in the midst of a pandemic, they were able to complete the required work, ensuring they were able to walk on May 28,” Principal Dr. Victor Hubbard said. “We cannot say enough about how resilient our students have been.”

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - There are three candidates running for the Democratic nomination in Ward 2 in the upcoming municipal primary elections.
With no Republican or independent challengers qualifying for Ward 2, the winner of the Democratic primary will go unchallenged in the general election.
Cedric Dallas is a graduate of Eureka Elementary School and a sixth-generation resident of the brickyard neighborhood in Ward 2. He says his experience in corporate America and the responsibility of managing a multi-million dollar budget will help his vision.

DALLAS, Texas (WDAM) - University of Southern Mississippi post player Melyia Grayson has been named Conference USA co-Freshman of the Year the league announced on Tuesday morning.
Grayson became just the second Lady Eagle to take home the honor since USM became a charter member of C=USA. She joins Kendra Reed, who won the award following the 2006-2007 season.
