Details scarce on incentive package; Hickory council, Catawba County board to hold joint meeting on incentives

The Hickory City Council and Catawba County Board of Commissioners will conduct a joint meeting on Jan. 20 to hold public hearings on economic incentives for the company American Fuji Seal. The Japanese-based manufacturer of product labels was announced as the newest tenant in the Trivium Corporate Center in December. Trivium is the business park being developed by the city and county between Startown and Robinwood roads. The corporate center’s board, which includes leaders from the city, county and Catawba County Economic Development Corporation, will hold a meeting at the same time. At this point, it is not clear exactly what incentives will be considered. 

Residents, real estate agents express worries over new Dollar General in Hickory

Three Hickory residents went to the Hickory City Council Tuesday to voice concerns over a Dollar General store planned for northwest Hickory and to ask if anything could be done to minimize the impact of the store. Developers received the go-ahead in December to begin construction on the dollar store near the intersection of 10th Street Boulevard NW and 12th Avenue NW at what was once the site of the Lutheran Home. The store could be open as soon as this spring. Chris Simmons, who lives near the site where the store will be located, said the store’s presence has prompted a backlash in the community.

Hickory City Council Meets In Regular Session Tuesday, Speed Limit Reduced On Stretch Of Roadway Hickory City Council Meets In Regular Session Tuesday, Speed Limit Reduced On Stretch Of Roadway January 6, 2021 Hickory City Council met in regular session Tuesday night (January 5). Minutes, second readings, and the consent agenda were all approved. Items on the consent agenda included the reduction of the speed limit to 25 miles-per-hour along 12th Street NE, 39th Avenue NE, 12th Street Court NE, 13th Street NE, 39th Avenue Place NE, and 13th Street Place NE. Also included in the consent agenda was the approval of a resolution accepting the offer of $80,000 from Jacomine Investments LLC for the purchase of city-owned property at 1730 1st Avenue SW and authorize the advertisement for upset bids. The property is approximately 4.66 acres. The consent agenda also included the acceptance of the offer to purchase city-owned property at 932 3rd Street Place SW in the amount of $154,725.

Hickory adopts plan for bike, pedestrian improvements

The Hickory City Council voted unanimously to adopt a biking and pedestrian plan calling for extensive development of bike lanes, sidewalks and multiuse paths throughout the city. The vote occurred at a special meeting Tuesday evening. Mayor Hank Guess and council members Charlotte Williams, Tony Wood, Danny Seaver and David Zagaroli were present. Councilman Jill Patton participated in the meeting via Zoom. Councilman David Williams was not present for the special meeting. The plan has been in the works since last December when the council voted to award Alta Planning + Design an $85,000 contract to help develop the project. The cost was covered in part by a $25,000 grant from LiveWell Catawba.
