Son Heung-min, rising stars to represent S. Korea at World Cup qualifiers

By Yoo Jee-ho SEOUL, May 24 (Yonhap) Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min and a group of youngsters will look to take South Korea to the next phase in the ongoing qualifying campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Son was one of 28 players named to the South Korean men s national team on Monday by head coach Paulo Bento, ahead of three World Cup qualifying matches scheduled for June. South Korea will serve as the centralized venue for all remaining Group H matches in the second round qualifying action for Asian countries. Teams last played in November 2019, and all matches set for 2020 got wiped out by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Injured Son Heung-min named to S. Korean roster for friendly vs. Japan March 15, 2021  Injured star Son Heung-min has been named to the South Korean national team for an upcoming men’s football friendly match against Japan. Head coach Paulo Bento unveiled his 24-man roster Monday at a press conference at the Korea Football Association (KFA) House in Seoul. South Korea and Japan, two longtime archrivals, will clash on March 25 in Yokohama for their first showdown since December 2019. Just hours before Bento’s announcement, Son suffered a left hamstring injury in a Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday in London. Son pulled up grabbing the back of his left leg and walked off in the 19th minute of the 2-1 loss.
