New Hawaii State Veterans Home Is Being Built On Land Designated For Affordable Housing
UPDATED. Construction crews broke ground on the 120-bed residential and treatment facility last month on a long-vacant lot in Kapolei. Reading time: 7 minutes.
Construction on a nearly $100 million new state veterans home on Oahu has finally begun after a series of delays and rejected locations.
But, according to House Finance Chair Sylvia Luke, the 120-bed facility ended up on 7 acres in the Westside neighborhood of Kapolei that had been designated for affordable housing.

Our affordable housing system is broken and Maui residents are in a crisis within a crisis. No one can say that past practices have fulfilled the need for affordable housing. So why continue to reach for the same tools in hopes that “maybe they will be the fix this time”? These tools may provide nice headlines, but they don’t produce homes for Maui residents. Recent legislation to address affordable housing stock on Maui was consistent with failed efforts of the past.
In late 2020, the Hawaii Community Foundation launched the House Maui Initiative, committing to play an objective role in creating systems change to help create equitable housing opportunities for Maui residents. We advocate for systemic and holistic solutions that are community driven, based on data and reflective of the needs of Maui families. Our goal is to help dismantle the barriers within government systems and raise the awareness of opportunities on the horizon to restore hope.

HONOLULU (AP) Maui Mayor Michael Victorino has vetoed a bill that would have applied stricter regulations to a state program that offers developers incentives to build affordable housing units.
The bill initially would have mandated that at least 75% of the homes in projects developed on Maui, Molokai and Lanai under the state program be affordable to households with incomes near the median, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday.
Maui councilperson Michael Molina proposed the bill and said developers receive too many benefits for producing too few affordable housing units.
“We’re just asking for more affordable housing,” Molina said earlier this month. “We’re trying to answer the needs of our community.”
