The Plaza Club and Alan Wong s are a just a few of the well known eateries, and Love s Bakery is one of the larger companies closing due to the COVID-19 crisis. And now, the Honolulu Sign Company is downsizing after eight decades in one location. Oahu Auctions is handling the closure of the Kalihi warehouse. Sen. Mike Gabbard introduced a non-binding resolution to the Hawaii Senate on Thursday requesting that the Marine Corps complete an Environmental Impact Study on a proposed underground sea wall at its Puuloa Range Training Facility in Ewa Beach.
The “shoreline stabilization project” is intended to protect the rifle range from coastal erosion, but local residents and state officials have warned that it would protect the range while hastening the erosion of the beach itself.
The proposal would involve driving a “sheet pile” retaining wall 20 feet into the bedrock beneath. In 2019, Hawaii Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands administrator Sam Lemmo told Civil Beat the proposed project “represents another death knell to our beaches.”

NIC Hawaii and the State of Hawaii Office of Information Practices (OIP) are pleased to announce the launch of the modernized State Public Meetings Calendar available at https://calendar.ehawaii.gov.
The calendar serves as the go-to online location to find out about all state agency, board and commission events and now makes it even easier for citizens to keep up with Hawaii state government. The site is responsive, meets accessibility requirements, has a fresh, appealing look and feel, is easy to navigate and offers search options by time period and by calendar name to find events of interest.
The project involves dredging offshore sand to cover the shoreline from Magic Island to Kewalo Basin, restoring the beach to its 1957 profile, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday.
The city’s preferred source of sand was 4,500 feet (1,372 meters) offshore from a surf break named Courts. It suggested that sand at the Hilton Hawaiian Village beach could be used as backup.
But the state Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, part of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, recommended the Hilton sand primarily be used because of its slightly coarser grain that’s a closer match to Ala Moana beach.
Board member Chris Yuen said during an application hearing Friday that he was inclined to approve the plan to add sand because “the rocks poke your feet” when entering the water.
