The pandemic has turned things upside down, but Huskies PA announcer John Tuite is still a fixture of gameday at UConn (courtesy of John Tuite). John Tuite’s full-time job is delivering the morning news on WILI radio in Willimantic and then literally spinning records as host of the “Vinyl Frontier,” where he plays tunes to fit the theme of the day he selects. Often later in the day Tuite has the best seat in the house for Husky basketball and ice hockey games at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, XL Center and Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum as the public address announcer, introducing players, providing information about the game and upcoming events.

Gampel Pavilion by a score of 72-41. The Huskies’ press defense and man-to-man coverage in the halfcourt overwhelmed the Hoyas, who committed 22 turnovers on the day. Junior forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa led all scorers with 19 points and 9 rebounds, and junior guard Christyn Williams added 17 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals for the Huskies. Freshman guard Kelsey Ransom led the Hoyas with 13 points and 4 assists, and freshman guard Yasmin Ott added 10 points of her own.

The 91-year-old former men’s basketball coach at UConn died early Sunday morning, according to the university. Rowe’s coaching career spanned 21 years at Worcester Academy and UConn, where he compiled a 300-132 record. As highly as Rowe was thought of as a coach, his contributions were likely even more impactful.

The Huskies’ slated game at Providence on Dec. 17 has been postponed to a later date following instruction from the Connecticut Department of Public Health. According to a release sent out by UConn, the CT DPH advised UConn against playing a game before completing its recommended modified quarantine of 14 days. The Huskies have been on pause since Sunday, Dec. 6, when a player tested positive for COVID-19. A non-Tier-1 member of the staff later also tested positive. The program has not had any other positive tests since then, and if that continues, the team will be allowed to return to practice on Monday, with additional risk-mitigation strategies in place until the 14-day quarantine is complete on Dec. 20.
