Kottayam district on Monday reported 1,275 fresh COVID-19 cases and of this, all but 10 were caused through local transmission. The TPR for the day stood at 19.54 %.
With 286 recoveries during the day, the district currently has 18,753 active cases while 43,959 people are under surveillance. Kottayam municipality, which reported 186 cases, continued to witness a spurt in cases, followed by Puthuppally with 53 cases. Kurichy panchayat reported 50 cases, while Changanassery , Karukachal and Chirakkadavu reported 44 cases each.

Third election to president post in the local body
Bindu Pradeep of the BJP was elected president of the Chennithala Thripperunthura grama panchayat in Alappuzha on Tuesday. Six Congress members abstained from voting.
Ms. Pradeep polled seven votes, including six of the BJP and one Independent. CPI(M) candidate Vijayamma Philendran got four votes. The vote of a CPI(M) member was declared invalid.
It was the third election in the last four months to the post of the president of the panchayat after no political front won a clear majority in the local body polls held in December 2020. Congress members abstain from voting Bindu Pradeep of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected president of the Chennithala Thripperunthura grama panchayat in Alappuzha on Tuesday. Congress members abstained from voting.
Ms. Pradeep polled seven votes, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)) candidate Vijayamma Philendran got four votes.
In the local body elections held in December 2020, both the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won six seats each, whereas the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) got five. An independent candidate secured one seat in the local body.
