On Jan. 23, 2021, at about 3:15 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies on patrol in the area of Shoemaker Road and Telescope Peak Road, near Hoopa, conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation.
While contacting the driver, 29-year-old
Kayce Marie Salas of Eureka, deputies observed a firearm in plain view inside the vehicle. Deputies recovered the firearm and found it to be loaded. Upon further investigation, Salas was found to be on active probation. During a search of Salas, deputies located approximately 0.65 grams of methamphetamine.
Salas was taken into custody and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm
During the investigation into the January 14, 2021, attempted murder shooting, a Eureka
Police Department Detective was able to positively identify 26-year-old Braylan Lanier
of Eureka as the shooter.
On January 21, 2021, at approximately 5:40 pm, while on surveillance in the vicinity of
Harris and “K” Streets in Eureka, the Eureka Police Department’s Problem Oriented
Policing (POP) unit, assisted by agents from the Humboldt County Drug Task Force,
witnessed Lanier enter a market in the 3100 block of “K” Street. Detectives entered
the market and took Lanier into custody without incident for Attempted Murder.

On January 14, 2021, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) served two search warrants resulting from a neighborhood complaint regarding illegal cannabis cultivation in the greater Eureka area. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Humboldt County Code Enforcement assisted in the service of the warrants.
Two parcels were investigated during the service of the warrants. The parcels did not possess the required county permit and state license to cultivate cannabis commercially.
At the first parcel, located on the 1400 block of Freshwater Road, deputies eradicated approximately 1,568 growing cannabis plants. Deputies seized and destroyed approximately 87.5 pounds of processed cannabis, 5 pounds of cannabis bud and 8 pounds of Butane Honey Oil. Deputies also located and seized two illegal firearms and three high-capacity magazines, in addition to $140,500 pursuant to

On Jan. 11, 2021, at about 12:45 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of McKinleyville Avenue and Murray Road in McKinleyville for the report of a domestic disturbance.
Deputies arrived in the area and observed a vehicle traveling on Murray Road at a slow rate of speed, with the driver, later identified as 39-year-old
Tashina Lachelle Barnett, arguing with a male pedestrian. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on Barnett’s vehicle, at which time the vehicle fled. Deputies initiated a pursuit of the vehicle, which continued onto U.S. Highway 101 with speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour.
Melton
On December 23, 2020, at about 1:30 p.m., a Detective with the Eureka Police
Department’s Problem Oriented Policing Team (POP) conducted a traffic stop near H
and Russ Streets for a minor traffic violation. The driver was identified as 50-year-old
William Mark Melton of Eureka.
The 47-year-old male passenger was found to be on searchable probation for sales of
methamphetamine. During the course of the search, Melton was asked to exit the
driver seat. Melton repeatedly refused and was ultimately removed from the vehicle by
officers and detained in handcuffs. Melton was found to be in possession of a concealed
