Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office: On Jan. 23, 2021, at about 3:15 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies on patrol in the area of Shoemaker Road and Telescope Peak Road, near Hoopa, conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation. While contacting the driver, 29-year-old Kayce Marie Salas of Eureka, deputies observed a firearm in plain view inside the vehicle. Deputies recovered the firearm and found it to be loaded. Upon further investigation, Salas was found to be on active probation. During a search of Salas, deputies located approximately 0.65 grams of methamphetamine. Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office: On January 14, 2021, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) served two search warrants resulting from a neighborhood complaint regarding illegal cannabis cultivation in the greater Eureka area. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Humboldt County Code Enforcement assisted in the service of the warrants. Two parcels were investigated during the service of the warrants. The parcels did not possess the required county permit and state license to cultivate cannabis commercially. At the first parcel, located on the 1400 block of Freshwater Road, deputies eradicated approximately 1,568 growing cannabis plants. Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office: On Jan. 11, 2021, at about 12:45 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of McKinleyville Avenue and Murray Road in McKinleyville for the report of a domestic disturbance. Deputies arrived in the area and observed a vehicle traveling on Murray Road at a slow rate of speed, with the driver, later identified as 39-year-old Tashina Lachelle Barnett, arguing with a male pedestrian. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on Barnett’s vehicle, at which time the vehicle fled. Deputies initiated a pursuit of the vehicle, which continued onto U.S. Highway 101 with speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour.

The driver was identified as 50-year-old William Mark Melton of Eureka. The 47-year-old male passenger was found to be on searchable probation for sales of methamphetamine.
