New Zealand’s population is projected to become more ethnically diverse over the next two decades, Stats NZ said today.
“While all ethnic group populations are expected to grow over the next two decades, the broad European ethnic group is projected to have the slowest growth,” population estimates and projections manager Hamish Slack said.
“Different growth rates between ethnic groups reflect different rates of birth, death, and migration.”

Stats NZ data on death rates between 2017-and-2019, shows men live to 80, on average, and women make it to 83 and a half.
That s a half-year increase for men - and point three of a year for women, since the 2012-to-2014 period.

Life expectancy for males has increased by 0.5 years since 2012–2014, and by 2.0 years since 2005–2007. Life expectancy for females has increased by 0.3 years and 1.3 years over the same time periods.

Life expectancy at birth for the New Zealand population as a whole is 80 years for males, and 83.5 years for females, based on death rates in the 2017-2019 period, Stats NZ said.
Life expectancy for males has increased by 0.5 years from the 2012-2014 period, and by two years from 2005-2007, and that for females has increased by 0.3 years and 1.3 years respectively, it said. While life expectancy is still increasing, the increase over the last few years is smaller than in the past, population estimates and projections manager Hamish Slack said in a statement.
