The mega sharks lurking off our coastline

WHILE some the shark-tooth predators lurking off the Mackay Whitsunday coastline travel great distances to Bali and New Caledonia, many of them like to stay closer to home. Laura, Shayna, Jon, Alan and Gareth are ordinary names but they belong to some of the creatures being tracked in our ocean to collect more data. A data-centric organisation built to help scientists collect previously unattainable data in the ocean has provided a rare insight into the movements of various sharks in our region. The satellite tracking website provides data on 16 tagged sharks in waters along the Whitsunday, Mackay and Isaac coasts including each shark s size, species and movements - including just how close they have come to our beaches and recreational areas.

Homeward bound - The Ellsworth American

Homeward bound ROY WHALEN PHOTO GOULDSBORO  Maine’s Downeast scallop fleet was out in force Monday with dozens of boats dragging across the state’s Fishery Management Zone 2 from Bass Harbor to Jonesport. The scallop fishermen included (above) Roy Whalen Jr. in the Hannah Marie (shown with deckhands Bob Smith and Chris Weaver) and Roy Whalen III (right) in the Slow Motion. Home-ported in South Gouldsboro, father and son went in opposite directions, but both did well, each landing the 15 gallons allowed daily per boat. Scallopers’ earnings also have shot up from $7 per pound at this time last year compared to $12-$13 per-pound this week. Still, so far this season, high winds have kept the Whalens and many others from venturing out on the four weekdays they’re permitted to fish under the Maine Department of Marine Resources’ 10-year rotational management plan.
