Orange Beach wins 2A State Title on seventh grader's game-ending home run

By Josh Bean | For the AHSAA OXFORD – Orange Beach High School’s girls’ softball team ended its first season in memorable fashion.     Makos’ seventh-grader Ava Hodo launched a dramatic two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting Orange Beach to a 3-2 victory over Pisgah in the Thursday’s Class 2A championship game at Choccolocco Park’s softball stadium.   Hodo’s teammates mobbed her at home plate as she ended the school’s first year with a state championship.     “I just wanted to hit a line drive to get my team going and start something,” Hodo told AL.com after the game. “To get a walk-off, it’s something you dream about. I’m so excited. I’m just over the moon. At the first of the year, Coach told us he was going to throw us in the deep end to see if we could swim. It turns out we really could.”

How an Oxford school's PTA raised £38k for new equipment

MORE than £38,000 has been raised to fund new laptops, a climbing frame and other outdoor equipment for an Oxford primary school. The Parent and Teacher Association (PTA) at St Aloysius’ Catholic Primary School has been raising the cash over the last three years. Fundraising has taken various forms, including cake and uniform sales, summer and Christmas fairs, music festivals and most recently, a ‘help at home scheme’ which saw children sponsored for doing extra jobs at home. Grants have also been made from the supermarket Morrisons, the Doris Field Charitable Trust and the Ernest Cook Trust. Hannah Duncan, acting headteacher at St Aloysius, said: “We are grateful to the PTA for all that it has done in partnership with the school community to fundraise for the outdoor equipment to enhance playtimes and learning outdoors as well as to update the laptops in school.
