Utah House committee passes online dating safety bill

The Daily Universe A proposed bill in the Utah House of Representatives aims to make criminal records more widely available to users of dating apps in order to help decrease rates of sexual and domestic violence. (Hannah Miner) The Utah House Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would allow people to search legal records of people they meet online. HB249 was passed through committee in a unanimous vote on Feb. 9. Following the passage, the bill is now on its way to the legislative floor to receive a vote from the House. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Stephen Handy, R-Layton, after listening to concerns from his constituents about domestic violence between intimate partners.

BYU Women s Services and Resources kicks off Eating Disorder Awareness Week

The Daily Universe BYU Women’s Services and Resources kicked off its annual Eating Disorder Awareness Week on Feb. 16. The week is scheduled with events that help students combat disordered behavior with food and body image. These involve speakers focused on eating disorder recovery and even yoga.  The office introduced the “Tips on Intuitive Eating” campaign on Tuesday to encourage students to have a more healthy relationship with food. On Wednesday, it had students to go to the Women’s Services and Resources office to see a gallery of eating disorder statistics and resources for recovery. The gallery will be up all week.

BYU student plans to drop pandemic lawsuit - The Daily Universe

A student suing Brigham Young University in response to its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic plans to drop his case. Chase Hiatt, 20, filed a lawsuit against BYU on Aug. 5, 2020, citing breach of contract and unjust enrichment. The class action suit accused BYU of providing insufficient alternatives for the expected college experience Hiatt paid for.

City council denies parking permit extension - The Daily Universe

The Daily Universe Cars lined up along Provo street south of BYU campus. The Provo City Council voted against an extension of the parking permit program in the University Gardens/Foothill neighborhood. (Hannah Miner) The Provo City Council voted against a proposal to extend the current parking permit program in the University Garden/North Foothills area.  The purpose of expanding the permit program to portions of 820 North from 1025 East to 900 East would be “to preserve on-street parking for those who live within the neighborhood and to prevent abandoned vehicles from remaining stationary on the street,” said city planner Javin Weaver.

It was a night never to be forgotten. BYU students will be telling their grandchildren years from now where they were when the No. 24 BYU men’s basketball team beat No. 2 Gonzaga on Feb. 22, 2020. Whether they were physically in the Marriott Center, at home on their couch, or even just listening to Greg Wrubell on the radio, Cougar Nation was united that night. Students waited outside the arena for days, eagerly anticipating the matchup. When the stadium officials finally started letting people inside, it wasn’t long before the arena had reached capacity as 18,987 fans quickly packed together like sardines, waiting for the gladiator match to begin.
