Battered wives will be handed up to $5000 to flee violent partners, as part of $1.1 billion in extra spending on safe houses, counselling and legal aid to keep women safe. The escape payment for 5000 women will include up to $1500 in immediate cash, plus $3500 in goods or direct payments of rental bonds, school fees or other essential items to start a new life. But domestic violence victims will no longer be able to tap into their superannuation early, amid concern that too many women have drained their retirement savings. Declaring that all Australians have the right to be safe , Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said one in four Australian women suffers violence from a current or former partner.

Premium Content From fatal assaults and neglect to drownings and suicide - Queensland children who are known to the Department of Child Safety are four times more likely to die than those who aren t. Statistics released via the Queensland Family and Child Commission s annual report into child deaths show 53 children died in the 2019/20 financial year who had had some contact with the department in the 12 months prior. Of those, 14 died from causes that are yet to be determined, 11 from natural causes, nine from assault or neglect, eight from suicide, five from crashes, three drowned, two died from unintentional injuries and one from SIDS or an undetermined cause.

Fourteen months after their daughter, Hannah and their three grandchildren, Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey were murdered, Sue and Lloyd Clarke have revealed they plan to set up gated communities to protect victim-survivors of domestic violence.
