With the Red Sox trailing, 4-3, in the seventh (and final) inning of their game against the Rays on Friday, Michael Chavis hit a two-run, opposite field home run to put Boston up, 5-4. In a spring training during which managers seem to be making up the rules as they go along, it was unclear if that meant the game was over, even with the Red Sox batting in the home half of the seventh.

In just over a month, Worcester will fully be a baseball town again. Momentum has grown since the franchise was awarded and Polar Park rose from the ground in the city’s Canal District. But when the first pitch is thrown in Scranton between the RailRiders and the Worcester Red Sox on April 6, in Pennsylvania and again a week later for the home opener, the arrival will be complete.

Last summer, I was tramping along the Sam Richardson trail behind my house in Northfield and crossed paths with Marc Aroner walking his Labrador retriever.
The 73-year-old Aroner is a jolly-faced graybeard who makes fishing rods and knows how to spin a yarn. He told me a story that day and it’s been stuck in my craw, so I called and asked him to refresh my memory.
Granted, it’s not what parents dream of when they stare in the crib, but crafting a bamboo fly rod is a noble profession nonetheless. The prototype was made in the 1840s by a Pennsylvania gunsmith and violin maker named Sam Phillippe.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has acquired 12 prospects via trade and selected two young players in the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft since being hired in October 2019.
Thirteen prospects added during Bloom’s tenure rank among the top 30 prospects organizationally.
But Baseball America has Boston’s farm system ranked 20th entering 2021 the same ranking it had entering 2020.
