What is Operation Talon?
Operation Talon is dubbed âa national programâ organized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to target illegal immigrants with convictions for sex crimes subject to deportation orders. However, a Google search reveals the original âOperation Talonâ was set up by Bill Clinton in 1997 as a part of his Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act.
Going by a 2000 report on a government website, the United States Department of Agriculture aka USDA s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) formed a partnership with Kentucky s Attorney General and Kentucky state and local law enforcement agencies to pilot âOperation Talonâ in Louisville and Lexington. The same report says that the first 85 felony arrests were made in May 1997 and the next year, in 1998, Hudson County Sheriff s Department agents and their USDA enforcement partners arrested 243 fugitive felons in New Jersey. Meet Bayonne’s first Hispanic city tax collector

Rosemarie Martinez continues to break barriers in Bayonne.
Martinez will be the first Hispanic in Bayonne history to serve as tax collector. She was also the city’s first Hispanic to work as chief of staff to Mayor Jimmy Davis.
“I am grateful to Mayor Davis and the City Council for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said in a statement.
Martinez was nominated by Davis, and the City Council unanimously approved it on Wednesday. She will serve in her new position from March 1 through Dec. 31. A four-year term will then follow starting on Jan. 1, until Dec. 31, 2025.
Hudson County launches COVID-19 vaccine awareness campaign
Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise launched a new public awareness campaign featuring county residents, designed to increase acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines, particularly in communities of color.
The first video features Hudson County Director of Health & Human Services Darice Toon talking about why she decided to get the vaccine.
“Darice Toon’s message to Hudson County residents is both simple and powerful: ‘trust the science, be a part of the solution,’ and I commend her for speaking out about this incredibly important issue,” DeGise said. “In order to beat back this pandemic, we will need as many people as possible to get vaccinated, and that means confronting some very real and historically justified fears, particularly in Black and Latino communities. That’s exactly why this campaign is so important and why we are excited to start it today.”

A Hoboken transformer outage briefly left about 5,000 residents north of 7th Street without power, though it is already been mostly restored, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla said this evening.

“Due to a transformer outage, portions of Hoboken north of 7th Street may be without power. Emergency responders and PSE&G are currently on site and evaluating a time frame for repairs,” the city wrote in a Nixle alert that went out at 8:14 p.m.
Sheriff’s office investigating body found in Braddock North Hudson Park

A body was found in a wooded area of James J. Braddock North Hudson Park in North Bergen Tuesday morning, authorities confirmed.
The incident is being investigated by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, the law enforcement agency that patrols and polices the county parks in the county, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office said.
At this point, the death is not considered suspicious. No other information, including the person’s identity, has been released.
Over the years the park’s small, wooded and secluded areas have been home to groups of the homeless, and it could be that the freezing temperatures played a role in the death. In 2014, a man was found dead near a homeless encampment in the park.
