Te Kura o Hau Karetu is a primary school, with a roll of 111, as at July 1, 2020. More than half of its students are Māori. During the past two years the Upper Hutt school cluster, which Te Kura o Hau Karetu is a part of, had been working together to find out more about the city s history. Through their research they discovered that a pā had existed on a bend in the river near the school called Te Haukaretu. However, after European settlers moved into the area it became known as Māoribank. Wellington said the name Māoribank could have negative connotations: “It started us thinking actually we need to change this, it’s not right. The name Te Haukaretu is much more respectful, meaningful and emotive.”
She suspects it may be an escapee form Zealandia or Kāpiti Island but was just thrilled to see the bird. ”It was the first time I have had to fill in a rare-bird sighting form, so that was pretty exciting.”

An extremely rare pāteke (brown teal) has been spotted in Lower Hutt. It has probably come from Zealandia, where a small population is flourishing in the sanctuary Because of its colouring, she suspects it was a young male. ”It is a bit sad that it is by itself.” According to DOC there are between 2000 and 2500 pāteke with the main populations on Great Barrier Island (700), Northland (600), and Coromandel (400).

Good article Patrick. I use a lot of Public transport so will be happy once that improves.
I have never been a cyclist. And am not likely to be, in everyday life. But I believe electric motorcycles are coming that would tempt me. It’s not about change but everyone choosing their own method to get around and reduce emissions.I am still not convinced about the growth of cycling as I see very few people on cycleways even on a holiday. I am not against cycling but the cost has to match the supposed growth.

After a what was a successful nesting season, 66 baby penguins from Matiu / Somes Island died of starvation during a horror couple of weeks in November.
The season ended with a total loss of 82 chicks, 35 percent of the babies hatched this year.
Matiu / Somes is a predator-free Island in the heart of Wellington Harbour, and home to a usually thriving colony of Little Blue Penguins, or kororā.
But this season, it was a different story.
Penguin expert, and advocate - Mike Rumble surveys the island every two weeks with a team of volunteers to check the 600-to-800 penguins it s home to.
