Longtime volunteer, A Rebecca Smith

The people of Cecil County lost a true treasure last week, Miss Ada Rebecca Smith, known to many as “Miss Becky”, passed away at the age of 105. She would have celebrated her 106th birthday on Monday, December 21. The much respected and loved educator and guidance counselor was born on December 21, 1914 in a blizzard and ice storm. Miss Smith was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church. She lived in Cecilton her whole life, except while attending Western Maryland College. After graduating from George Biddle High School in 1931, she graduated from college at the age of 20. Miss Smith was hired to teach at Perryville High School in 1935. In the 10 years she taught there, she was a social studies teacher and a volleyball coach. In 1943, Miss Smith transferred to Elkton High School, where she taught U.S. History. In 1966, she became one of the first guidance counselors in the county. She remained a guidance counselor until her retirement in 1976, having taught and co

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968, Lawnside School Board President Morris L. Smith acted quickly to pay homage to the civil rights leader in his South Jersey community. Five days after King was slain, the school district, led by Mr. Smith, adopted a resolution to make King’s Jan. 15 birthday a holiday, commencing in 1969. Lawnside was believed to be the first municipality to commemorate the day, 14 years before it was declared a federal holiday. Mr. Smith, 87, an activist who championed civil rights and diversity, an inventor, a chemist and engineer, a community leader, and a Sunday school teacher, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, at his Lawnside home of complications from colon cancer.

Koral Nichols Murdoch, 82, formerly of Ogdensburg

Tuesday, December 15, 2020 - 2:42 pm On Thursday, November 26, 2020, Koral Nichols Murdoch, loving wife, mother of two children, grandmother of eight grandchildren, and great-grandmother of three great-grandchildren passed away at the age of 82. Koral was born on March 21, 1938, in the family homestead (circa 1796) in Galilee NY, just outside of Ogdensburg, NY, to Willard and Susan (Dewey) Nichols, and was the oldest of seven children. She grew up on the family farm in Ogdensburg until 1956 when she attended the St. Lawrence Academy Nursing School. She earned her Nursing certification in the Spring of 1958 and began working in Syracuse. She met her husband, James (Larry) Murdoch, a U.S. Air Force Sergeant attending the language school at Syracuse University, at a dance in December 1958. A quick romance ensued, and Koral and Larry were engaged by the end of January and married on May 23, 1959. The newlyweds moved to Germany in mid-1959, on Larry’s assignment to Bremerhaven
