Jazz 101 This virtual class will take place on Zoom. Tickets: $10 for individual sessions/dates; $56 for All 8 sessions Tickets may be purchased for all 8 sessions (choose the All 8 sessions ticket on April 6) or for individual sessions/dates. Taught by jazz researcher and educator Ben Young, Jazz 101 is a survey of the history of Jazz music, held over eight two-hour sessions one per week. The course is designed for listeners at all experience levels: Using historic Jazz recordings we illustrate where the music came from, how it works, and how the styles have evolved. We will also explore Jazz in the socio-historical context of 20th Century America. The essential part of course is great music and the rich stories of the figures who shaped the music. It’s a lecture format, but no question is too basic. No papers, no tests, no entrance requirements, no one will call on you in class. Just check in and dig the sounds.
If you know Kitty Kallen at all, it probably is subliminally. Her 1945 number one hit recording of âItâs Been a Long, Long Timeâ plays during the closing credits of âAvengers: Endgame.â A few years earlier, her 1954 number one hit âLittle Things Mean a Lotâ served as the musical motif for âCircle of Friendsâ (the movie in which Minnie Driver has a crush on Chris OâDonnellâs character).
A newly published screenplay, âLittle Things Mean a Lot,â by Michael Monteith rescues Kitty Kallen from obscurity. The Washington Post said her voice was âpitch perfect;â the New York Times referred to its âvelvetâ quality. Between the late 1930s and the mid-1960s she charted on Billboard dozens of times and arguably had four of the biggest 100 hits of the 20th century. (The other two being âBesame Muchoâ and Duke Ellingtonâs classic âIâm Beginning to See the Light.â)
Event Description
As with all art, music is
shaped by world events and in no other
period of American history do world
events have a greater impact than in the
music called Swing. History records the
stress created by economic crisis and
war, a stress that was mainly addressed
through dance, music, and the movies.
Swing Music was an integral force in all

Swing Era took music that had roots
in New Orleans with Louis Armstrong
and developed it into a sophisticated
art form that was, and continues to be,
enjoyed by people of all cultures from

By the delicate hand of Didier Kassaï (
Storm Over Bangui) comes a comic book documentary about the street children of Bangui, told in a style that mixes photo and illustration. In the Central African Republic, children grow up in a state of insecurity, poverty and malnutrition. The 2013 conflict only exacerbated this situation. The Central African Republic has become what many call “a house without windows.” Through illustrations and photos, this comic takes you into the heart of this “forgotten crisis.” With Central African artist Didier Kassaï and British photojournalist Marc Ellison as your guides, watch children at work in a diamond mine, observe life in a refugee camp and meet the street children of Bangui. Marc Ellison is currently based in Glasgow, Scotland, though this award-winning photojournalist’s favourite subject is Africa. Difficulties of reintegration of girl soldiers in Uganda, practices of female genital mutilation, topics on child marriage in T
