The cavernous dining hall known as Commons seen here in a post-renovation photo while its floor was still being used as a construction staging area looks much the same as it ever did. It will be a welcoming dining hall at lunchtime, but it now has infrastructure to be used for performances and events. And it’s air-conditioned.

Foundation Fellow Zakiyya Ellington came to UGA, in part for the big sports atmosphere and in part for the travel associated with her fellowship. She’s studied at Oxford, and traveled to Tanzania, Morocco, Spain, France and Costa Rica. Still one of her favorite UGA experiences was playing women’s club rugby, which taught her to be fearless. Up next, she’ll be pursuing a master’s degree in global affairs in China.

But the Blackstone chief executiveâs largess hasnât always bought good will: There was swift opposition to his proposal to put his name on Abington Senior High School in Pennsylvania, and his close ties to former President Donald J. Trump contributed to opposition to having his name on a campus center he funded at Yale.

Journalist Lucia Wei He (SFS’15) describes herself as “a product of the crossroads between Argentina and China.” Raised in Mar del Plata, Argentina by her Chinese parents, the Georgetown alumna’s upbringing led to a deep fascination with China-Latin America relations. She now will explore the field more deeply through study in Beijing as a Schwarzman Scholar.
