In our pregame conversation Friday, UMD head coach Scott Sandelin emphasized the importance of a good start in the series opener against Miami.
The score looks great, with UMD having won 8-1 to pick up a fifth straight win and improve to 5-0 against the RedHawks this season. The individual results are fantastic, as well. Jackson Cates (five assists) finished one assist shy of the school record. Cole Koepke recorded his first career hat trick. Kobe Roth scored twice.
It didn’t start that way. Miami thought it had taken a 1-0 lead on a long shot by big defenseman Jack Clement that eluded UMD goalie Ryan Fanti. Problem: Miami forward Michael Holland was all up in Fanti’s face, and the contact he initiated with the UMD goalie prevented Fanti from, you know, doing his job. Referees Sterling Egan and Nick Krebsbach had little choice but to overturn the call of “good goal” on the ice.

One of the low-key really weird things about this 2020-21 NCHC season is the frequency of opponents. It’s something Scott Sandelin talked about Wednesday on his weekly Zoom session with local media.
During a “normal” 24-game NCHC season, teams will play five of the seven other NCHC teams four times each (two home and two away), the other two twice in one venue. In order to make this pandemic-hampered season work as well as possible, the league divided into divisions and took care of all the cross-division play at the NCHC Pod.

UMD head coach Scott Sandelin knew Western Michigan wouldn’t make it easy on his team Sunday at Amsoil Arena. The Bulldogs weathered an early storm from the Broncos, were buoyed by a strong penalty kill, and got to work in the offensive zone. Opportunistic on scoring chances early, UMD was able to ride out a 4-1 victory for a two-game sweep that could be a real shot in the arm for the Bulldogs.
“Good game for us, hard-fought,” Sandelin said. “They were a better team than (Saturday). They came out, which we knew they would. Zach (Stejskal) made some huge saves. I thought the last 15 minutes, we were playing very well.”
DULUTH, Minn. – This was not the home opening weekend that the UMD men’s hockey team was hoping for by getting swept by St. Cloud State. But it was a weekend to remember for the new guys. Two rookies scored their first career goals while one had a stellar home debut in net. Forwards Luke Mylymok and Blake Biondi both.

There are no secrets when UMD is playing North Dakota. The game will likely be fast, physical, intense, and emotional. Zero pretense.
The emotions really didn’t spill like we’ve so often seen in Thursday’s 2-2 tie at the NCHC Pod, which was followed up by a three-round shootout that UMD won 1-0 for an extra point in the league standings. In fact, the five combined penalties for just ten minutes are the fewest we’ve seen in a UMD-North Dakota game going back at least 20 years, to the point where collegehockeystats.net started publishing game box scores.
