The Des Moines suburbs continued to lead Iowa s growth, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.
The agency estimates that Waukee, Grimes, Ankeny, Norwalk and Johnston grew faster than any other cities in the state from 2019 to 2020.
The data indicate the core metro counties, Polk and Dallas, saw a combined population increase of about 6,600. That compares to an overall state population increase of about 4,000 implying that people on the move in Iowa are either coming to the Des Moines metro or leaving the state.

Pork producers want the federal government to fight a judge s ruling that will prevent U.S. meatpacking plants from speeding up processing lines, saying the decision would cost them $83 million this year if it s allowed to stand.
Unions representing meatpacking workers in Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas, along with a consumer advocacy group, challenged the U.S. Department of Agriculture rule in October 2019, saying it endangered worker and food safety.
A Minnesota federal judge agreed in part in March, saying the Trump administration failed to properly consider the risks to workers when the department during its tenure allowed pork plants to speed up production lines.
The Agriculture Department in September 2019 finalized the rule allowing higher line speeds at participating pork plants. At other pork plants, the inspection line speed was capped at 1,106 hogs an hour.
The council said the rule isn t new. It expands on a pilot program that was introduced 20 years ago under the Clinton administration and further developed under the Obama administration.
Five pork facilities have run at higher line speeds since the pilot project was introduced. Three additional plants entered the new swine inspection system, but only one, a Seaboard plant in Guymon, Oklahoma, has adopted higher line speeds, the group said.
