Sitting outside of one of her neighbor’s home on Boston Avenue and 30th Street, Barrio Logan resident Philomena Marino pauses to let a semitrailer drive past before she speaks. “Monkey see monkey do, it started off with one or two but it’s increasing,” Marino said as the semitrailer continues driving down the residential street.

Editor’s note: This story is No. 5 in a series looking at the top 10 stories of 2020 for the Sun Journal, counting down from 10 to 1 from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1.  Craven County Commission Johnnie Sampson, an icon in the black community for most of his 87 years, died at home Nov. 5  after a month-long battle with pneumonia and COVID-19. His daughter Betty confirmed that “It was peaceful.” After being hospitalized three times since early October, she said he had returned home on Sampson Street one last time on Sunday, Nov. 1. That was four Sundays since he and wife Ethel both became sick and was admitted to CarolinaEast Medical Center. Ethel came home a week later and has since been recovering.

DOTD OK d for public-private partnership on Calcasieu Bridge project KATC News and last updated 2020-12-18 16:31:48-05 DOTD has received approval to solicit proposals and enter into a contract for a public-private partnership to build and finance a new Calcasieu River Bridge on Interstate 10 in Lake Charles. The Louisiana Joint Transportation and Highway and Public Works Committee gave its approval for the proposals. The bridge was built in 1952 and needs to be replaced to meet today’s federal highway standards. This project will extend from the I-10/I-210 west interchange to the Ryan Street exit ramp on the east side of the bridge. The Calcasieu River Bridge and the interstate within the project limits will be reconstructed to ensure that the vertical clearance, horizontal alignment, sight distances and other road and bridge elements meet current design criteria.
