New Orders
According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in December 2020 were up 27% over December 2019, following six months of significant double-digit growth in orders. The 27% increase was even higher than November’s 17% increase, which had been the first month that orders had slowed somewhat. We had heard that orders had begun to slow somewhat from the 40 plus % increases so November’s lower increase was no surprise. While the 27% increase was somewhat slower, it was higher than we expected based on our conversations. Some 84% of our participants reported increased orders compared to last December.

HIGH POINT, N.C. - New orders for residential furniture continued to rise in December, up 27% compared to 2019. This continues the streak of year-over-year double-digit increases since June 2020, as reported by Smith Leonard in the latest issue of Furniture Insights. The increase in new orders was reported by about 84% of the residential furniture manufacturers and distributors participating in the monthly survey. While we noted last month that orders were expected to slow somewhat, and they did by slowing from increases of 40% plus to a 17% increase in the November to November comparison, December’s order rate trended back up again, said Ken Smith, managing partner at Smith Leonard.

New Orders
New orders were up 17% in November compared to November 2019 according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. This increase followed five months of significant increases beginning with June’s 30% increase, 39% in July, 51% in August, 43% in September and 40% in October. From conversations we had, we expected the increases to begin to slow and the November results proved that to be in line. About three quarters of the participants reported increases in orders over last November, in line with October results.
The November increase left the year to date increase at 14%. For the 11 months ended November, some 66% of the participants reported increased year to date orders, up from 59% reporting increases last month.
