A series of 19 earthquakes struck along the California-Nevada border starting just before 4 pm Thursday, July 8, most of which struck with a magnitude of about 3.0. The largest reported earthquake was a 5.9 tremblor, the US Geological Survey reported. The latest quake occurred at roughly 3:49 pm local time, centered near Markleeville in Alpine County, about 20 miles southwest of Smith Valley. It was felt as far as Fresno, Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Occurring at a depth of six miles, the quake caused rock slides on US 395, leading to a temporary closure of the highway. The State Department of Transportation announced the closure of 40 miles of highway, from Willow Springs to the Nevada border. (KERO) â If you felt the ground shake Thursday afternoon, you were not the only one. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Lake Tahoe in Smith Valley, Nevada.
Another magnitude 4.88 hit Farmington, which is near Stockton, here in California plus there were a few other smaller aftershocks.
Some viewers calling and telling us they could feel shaking here in East Bakersfield.

SAN FRANCISO: A magnitude 6 earthquake jolted both sides of the California-Nevada border, tossed boulders onto a major roadway and was felt as far off as Las Vegas and even San Francisco, with days of aftershocks predicted, authorities said.
The quake shortly before 4pm Thursday was centered south of Lake Tahoe near Walker, a rural community of a few hundred households in the eastern Sierra Nevada. No major damage or injuries were reported, authorities said.
5.9M Earthquake on California-Nevada Border Felt In Bay Area, Sacramento
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Thursday afternoon near Smith Valley, Nevada in the eastern Sierra, about 80 miles south of Reno, and shaking was felt all across the Bay Area, including in San Francisco.
The quake occurred at 3:49 p.m. according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and reports of shaking came in from across the Central Valley in Stockton and Modesto, and as far north as Sacramento and Roseville. There were subsequently over a dozen smaller earthquakes, a couple of which were over 4.0M, over the next hour.
The epicenter of the quake was on the California side of the border in the Sierra, in Little Antelope Valley, just south of the town of Coleville, in Mono County.
