Ofgem has launched a consultation on the initial proposals for the first two HVDC links for the UK’s east coast.
The links would deliver an underwater energy super-highway that could see the North Sea become the hidden power house of Europe, it said.
Ofgem has stated there is a clear benefit to consumers to progressing with plans for the links, recognising the crucial role they play in supporting the growth of renewables and reaching the UK’s climate change targets.
The multi-billion-pound project could significantly increase the UK’s capacity for renewable power and be capable of transmitting enough electricity across the two links for around four million homes.

The work, which includes a new electircity line, will be complete by the end of the year.
SP Energy Networks says it has started work on the wooded pole line between the two towns.
It will also upgrade the substation at Wem, with the firm saying the work will boost network capacity and resilience throughout North Shropshire .
The project was granted planning permission by Alok Sharma, Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), in March 2020.
SP Energy Networks and Siemens are trialling new environmentally-friendly ‘clean-air’ technology at one of the former s electricity substations.
The project will pilot new switchgear technology developed by Siemens that, if successful and rolled out more widely, has the potential to reduce the volume of a greenhouse gas currently used in substations.
The first UK installation of an 8DJH 12 switchgear ring main unit means that the substation will be able to operate free of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), which is commonly used as an insulator for electrical equipment in substations across the UK.
The trial will take place at an SP Energy Networks substation in MacLean Square in Glasgow.
