Spokane Public Schools Board will negotiate proposed stadium with new partnership

KXLY April 21, 2021 7:42 PM Kaitlin Knapp Updated: SPOKANE, Wash. Spokane Public Schools Board voted to move toward a partnership with the Spokane Public Facilities District and Spokane Civic Theater and negotiate on the plan to build a new stadium in downtown Spokane. “I don’t know that we’ll be able to get there with negotiations. You know, part of negotiations is to throw out there what you hope to achieve for your constituents and stakeholders and I think this does that,” said board vice president Mike Wiser. “There’s going to be stuff that we’re maybe not going to be able to address, but I think that what we have here is getting there as close as possible,” said board member Aryn Ziehnert.

KXLY April 21, 2021 8:26 AM Erin Robinson Updated: SPOKANE, Wash. Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward has expressed her support of the proposal for a downtown sports stadium. “After respectfully considering the many decisions that go into making a decision like this, supporting the downtown location makes the most community, access and financial sense,” Woodward said in a YouTube video. In that levy there was also an advisory vote on whether the new facility should be downtown. Voters resoundingly said no, leave it where it is. In this case, the voters got it wrong. Before the we already voted on it crowd chimes in, I agree: We did vote on it. But we also had to vote twice on replacing the Boone Street Barn before it passed, and look what that has done for our city. We have also reconsidered many voters decisions to benefit our community, including decisions affecting Spokane Public Transit and other school bonds and levies.

Spokane School Board to hold public forums on Downtown Stadium

Credit Courtesy of Downtown Spokane Partnership A month before the Spokane Public School Board is scheduled to start construction on a new Joe Albi Stadium, they will again ask constituents if they want the stadium to be built downtown instead. The pivot comes after a request from a coalition of business organizations and hospitality leaders as well as a professional soccer league. During a school board meeting Wednesday, they promised to cover maintenance of operation costs for the facility and offered some private investment if the school district built the stadium downtown. School Board President Jerrall Haynes suggested holding public forums to allow the community to quickly weigh in on a stadium, before the board can discuss it, and decide.
