Health experts remain wary of Dallas County’s herd immunity as delta variant continues to spread

As coronavirus hospitalizations rise again and variant cases of the disease increase, some area health experts are wary of the announcement that Dallas County has reached herd immunity.
The Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation, which has tracked Dallas County’s coronavirus numbers since the start of the pandemic, announced that the county reached the threshold meaning 80% of the population had antibodies July 4. The center’s estimates accounted for people who are vaccinated, as well as those who have recovered from COVID-19.

Researchers are attributing the low numbers to people taking extra precautions to be safe and getting vaccinated.
AUSTIN, Texas - COVID-19 cases in Austin continue to steadily decline despite a few cases of the new Delta Variant popping up in Williamson County. Researchers are attributing the low numbers to people taking extra precautions to be safe and getting vaccinated. Right now, we re estimating about half the mortality in Austin per capita compared to many comparable major cities in the state so I think we should be really proud of that as a community, said Spencer Fox, Associate Director of the UT COVID-19 Modeling Consortium
