The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas has reopened with two new exhibitions that address health and the human body, relevant topics amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Curator Cassandra Mesick Braun has been interested in art related to human health for approximately six years. To create these exhibitions, she attended various conferences, researched the museumâs existing art collection, and met with contemporary artists who were also interested in health and the human body.
The KU Spencer Museum of Art reopened to the public in November for the first time since closing in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Visitors are allowed by reservation only to ensure safety protocols.Â

LAWRENCE An interdisciplinary research team at the University of Kansas has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to turn challenges, biases and pressures women face while transitioning from incarceration back to society into an interactive artistic exhibition for the public.
The two-year, $25,000 NEA grant will fund a partnership among a KU journalism and mass communications researcher, a Spencer Museum of Art curator and an artist at Harvard University to develop “Returning: Community-Based Visual Art Experience Involving Women Transitioning from Jail or Prison.” The project will partner researchers, students, artists and formerly incarcerated women to raise awareness and empathy for the obstacles the women face in returning from incarceration.
LAWRENCE Four outstanding juniors will be the University of Kansas nominees for Harry S. Truman Scholarships.
The students are competing for the prestigious national awards, which provide up to $30,000 for graduate study. The awards are given to college juniors for leadership in public service. They are highly competitive, with only about 60 Truman Scholars named nationwide each year.
This year’s KU nominees:
Radhia Abdirahman, majoring in global & international studies and human biology (applied behavioral sciences)
Rachel Hall, majoring in global & international studies and political science and minoring in intelligence and national security studies
Gustavo Murillo-Espinoza, majoring in molecular, cellular & developmental biology and a minor in Latino/a studies

LAWRENCE The Spencer Museum of Art will reopen to the public Feb. 20 with two new exhibitions that explore the human body throughout history and across cultures.
Public gallery hours will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Visitors can make a free reservation to explore the galleries, which will have reduced capacity in accordance with public health and safety guidelines.
“Healing, Knowing, Seeing the Body” includes works ranging from ancient to contemporary that demonstrate how understandings of the body and its many complexities have changed over time. The exhibition includes two sound sculptures by Canadian artist Ingrid Bachmann titled “Embrace.” Bachmann’s work is a site-specific installation intended to help viewers calm and center their bodies.
